In My Mailbox #8

I went to two of my local libraries today and got (all books are in Spanish, and I thought I'd show you what covers they've got, as some are not the same as their English counterparts):

Chica de Fuego (Firelight, Firelight, #1), by Sophie Jordan

This one's been in my TBR list since it came out, and I loved seeing it in my local library, so of course I bought it!

Dragons and romance, hell yeah!

Prueba de Fuego (The Scorch Trials, Maze Runner #2), by James Dashner

Loved The Maze Runner, and I'm hoping to love this one even more!

Dulce Fuego (Fire Study, Study #3), by Maria V. Snyder

The Insider Series made me love Maria's writing (can't wait for book 3!), and when I saw this one in a used bookstore, I actually squaled. Too bad I don't have neither Poison Study nor Magic Study, but now I'll definitely see if I can find them!

Cinco Cerditos (Five Little Pigs, Poirot #24), by Agatha Christie

I haven't read any Christie yet, so I thought this was a good time to start.
Also bought in the used bookstore.

Have you bought anything interesting this week?

In My Mailbox #7

This week I got a couple of books; a printed one, and a few eARCs:

Tierras de Esmeralda: La Esfera Mágica, by Pilar Alberdi.
(Printed. From Publisher.)

Summary from Goodreads (translated by me):
A land of leyend, where numerous characters face the darkness released by Ténebrus and his minions. While on the Lands of Esmerald, their inhabitants have understood that a book is worth as much as a library, and a person as much as all people, on the dark world beside them, evil lurks in shadows.

Can a group of teenagers and an elder restore hope to the villages? And what about those flying young people from Tilsmans?
To know that, just open this book, where it reads...
"Lands of  Esmerald or the lineage of the Smáragdos. Also known as the Land of the Three Kingdoms (Mytos, Circe and Artemisa), the three lineages and the three libraries." Submerge in a classical and medieval world, where the wondrous becomes real. A war between good and evil. This is just the beginning.

The Near Witch, by Victoria Schwab.
(eARC from NetGalley.)

Summary from Goodreads:
The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company.

And there are no strangers in the town of Near. These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.
But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.
The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him.
As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.
Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget.

Starcrossed, by Josephine Angelini.
(eARC from NetGalley.)

Summary from Goodreads:
How do you defy destiny?
Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.
As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

Populazzi, by Elise Allen.
(eARC from NetGalley. Author Interview and Giveaway to come!)

Summary from Goodreads:

Cara has always dreamed of being a Populazzi, one of the popular crowd. But it’s not until she changes schools that she gets a shot at it, thanks to her best friend Claudia’s crazy plan. The idea is simple: The rungs of The Ladder are relationships. First get a boyfriend who's ranked low, then climb up through more boyfriends until you're not just one of the Populazzi, but the Supreme Populazzi. Yet what starts off as a fairy tale turns into a somewhat dark comedy of errors. Just when Cara reaches the top, her life hits rock bottom. She wonders why she wanted to be popular in the first place—and if there’s any way to live happily ever after now.

I've got a bunch more on NetGalley, but I don't want to make this post uber-long. What did you get this week?

Summary:

Fifteen-year-old Tilly, Fran, Marlee and Pink are surfer girls.

They have been meeting for the first surf of the season every year since they first met at the surf school run by Tilly’s dad, Phil, when they were eight.

Phil has big plans for the surf school this year, but when he is injured in a hit-and-run accident, everything suddenly seems uncertain.

While Phil languishes in hospital and the police track his attacker, Tilly is determined to realise his plans and keep the surf school open. To do this, she needs all the help she can get from her friends.

But Marlee is training for the surfing competition to win a new board and beat the moody Kyle, Pink is warring with her parents and intrigued by the stranger Kim, and Fran is busy making jewellery.

Laurine Croasdale has published three fiction titles for UQP (Trivia Man, Red Golf Balls, What Truly Counts), and a range of non-fiction titles (including two for Macmillan Education).

She was also a writer on Hi 5 for Channel 9. She reviews books regularly on radio, and spent five years reviewing children’s and adults’ titles on Angela Catterns’ breakfast show on ABC radio.

Laurine had the idea for Surf School many years ago but felt that its popularity had not yet reached its peak.

The story weaves together her childhood on the northern beaches with her daughter’s experiences growing up today.

Summary:

Winter swells are rolling into Diamond Beach. But surfer girls Fran, Pink, Marlee and Tilly are still consumed by all things surfing.

Fran and Pink are collaborating on a surf label, and there’s news of a major surfing contest at treacherous Shipwreck Beach — a chance for Marlee and Tilly to dazzle on the world stage.

But parents and boyfriends are distracting the girls from their big plans.

Pink’s mother Christie is determined to control her spirited daughter; Marlee tells Kyle she has to concentrate on her surfing; and Jamie still can’t see that Tilly is anything more than just a friend.

The absorbing, dramatic sequel to Surf School.

Remember you can win both Surf books here! This contest is open internationally, and I'd love it if you could tweet or tell your friends about it!

I also got Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure, and Zan-Gah and the Beautiful Country, by Allan Richard Shickman, but couldn't find pics to show you the covers.
I see a lot of bloggers got these books too, and I'd love to hear what they've got to say about them.

Butterflies, by Susanne Gervay.

Coping with severe burns, the hospital and doctors is not easy when all you want to do is be a teenage girl.

Katherine was severely burnt in an accident when she was two years old. Now 17, she lives with her mother and 22 year-old sister. Their father left the family when they were very young. Katherine still needs regular skin grafts.

This is a moving and well-written tale of emotional and physical damage and Katherine′s need to overcome her fears. It is a positive story of individual strength and family love. Whether a person is physically damaged or ′perfectly normal′ life still has to be lived and the story of Katherine and her friends relates to all teenagers.

That's Why I Wrote This Song, by Susanne Gervay.

'That's Why I Wrote This Song' is the journey of four sixteen-seventeen year old girls and their relationships with their fathers - the good, the bad and the PSYCHO - and how that impacts on their relationships with boys, each other and their lives.

thanks susanne for sending me these two awesome books!
can't wait to read them.

In My Mailbox #2

In My Mailbox was inspired by Alea of Pop Culture Junkie
and started by Kristi of The Story Siren.

This week I got some great books!

Summary (from Amazon):

Unceremoniously fired from her job as Half Moon Hollow's children's librarian, Jane Jameson drowns her sorrows with a handsome stranger, vampire Gabriel Nightengale. When Jane is accidentally shot, Gabriel saves her life by turning her undead. As Jane starts to get used to chatting with her dead aunt, finding creative ways to dodge her mother's nosy questions and enjoying the chemistry with Gabriel, she's brought up short by being named a suspect in a recent vampire murder. Jane's snarky first-person narrative is as charming as it is hilarious,g enough humanity to connect instantly with readers. Harper keeps the quips coming without overdoing the sarcasm, and her take on vampire lore will intrigue and entertain even the most jaded paranormal fan.

Read my Review here.

Summary (from Amazon):

Once a devoted children's librarian, Jane Jameson now works at a retaininrundown occult bookstore. Once a regular gal, she's now a vampire. And instead of a bride, she's an eternal bridesmaid -- which leads her to question where exactly her relationship with her irresistibly sexy sire, Gabriel, is headed. Mercurial, enigmatic, apparently commitment-phobic vampires are nothing if not hard to read. While Jane is trying to master undead dating, she is also donning the ugliest bridesmaid's dress in history at her best friend Zeb's Titanic-themed wedding. Between a freaked-out groom-to-be, his hostile werewolf in-laws, and Zeb's mother, hell-bent on seeing Jane walk the aisle with Zeb, Jane's got the feeling she's just rearranging the proverbial deck chairs.Meanwhile, Half Moon Hollow's own Black Widow, Jane's Grandma Ruthie, has met her match in her latest fiancé. He smells like bad cheese and has a suspicious history of dead spouses. But Jane's biting her tongue. After all, would a nice girl really think she has a future with a vampire?

---Thanks to Diane for holding the giveaway in which I won these books! and Thanks to Molly for signing them both!---

Summary (from NadineLamanBooks):

Kathryn abruptly ends a self-imposed exile to return to Los Angeles. Her friends and a cryptic letter written by a powerful man push Kathryn to reconcile the past. Who says, “You can’t go home again?” Sometimes that is exactly what must be done. But, is it worth it?

Summary (from NadineLamanBooks):

Kathryn has the perfect job, the perfect friends and family, and the perfect lover; until a client dies, her lover moves away, she meets her paternal grandfather and learns the secret of her identity. Things are starting to make sense or are they really what they appear to be?

Summary (from NadineLamanBooks):
Grandfather McKenzie makes a surprise announcement at a staged media event. He names his successor to the McKenzie multi-billion dollar empire. The McKenzie heirs are not thrilled. The first lesson is: Money corrupts. Lesson two: Everyone has an agenda.

Thanks Nadine for sending
me these awesome books!

She also sent me a really cool cap, which I plan to use whenever I go for a walk along the riverside. Thank you, you're the best!

Summary (from JeannineGarsee.com):

Who is the “real” Shawna Gallagher? “Perfect” Shawna, a mature, responsible high school senior who caters to her controlling father, and plans to attend medical school instead of exploring her talent as an artist? “Pathetic” Shawna, who still stings from the betrayal of her former best friend, and lusts painfully after a guy who’s obviously out for one thing? Or “Evil” Shawna, whose unexpected snarky comments make the other Shawnas shrivel with embarrassment, and who resents the fact that her estranged, openly gay mom deserted her years ago? Her life explodes when her mom suddenly dies, leaving behind a long-time lover, Fran, and Fran’s two sons. Seventeen-year-old Arye makes no attempt to hide his disdain for Shawna, while his quirky little brother Schmule takes an inexplicable liking to her—two “stepbrothers” who knew and loved Shawna’s mom in a way she never had a chance to. When Shawna discovers the secret of Schmule’s origin, the chain of events that follow lead to a “new” Shawna who questions everything she once took for granted: her desire to be perfect, her sexuality, the meaning of friendship—and even her love for her father whose single act of violence she can’t forget.

---Can't wait to read this one! Thanks Nadine for the awesome giveaway, And Thank you Jeannine for signing the book!---

Last week (I saw the book at the store and I just couldn't wait anymore, so I took my savings and) bought:

Yep.

The Hunger Games.

My new book obsession.

What did you get?

Aug 30, 2009

In My Mailbox Wannabe

This is the day of the week in which I get sad...
Cause every book blogger gets at least a book to review
(and to do their IMM post)
and I don't, cause I live far from the rest of them.

Far, as in very far.
Patagonia-end-of-the-world far.

If there's any author who is reading this,
I tell you:

You can send me a copy of your book,
and I promise you it will be reviewed!
And I'll pass it along to all of my friends, and they will end up liking it too :o)
(I do that a lot)
It doesn't matter that it takes 2, 3 weeks to get to me,
I can wait :o)
(winning books in giveaways and waiting for them taught me to be patient)

Cause there are some books I am dying to read.
Such as:

BEWARE
*LONG LIST OF WANTED BOOKS AHEAD*

*The Maggie Stiefvater books
*Beautiful Creatures, by Kami Garcia and Margie Stohl

*Hush, Hush, by Becca Fitzpatrick
*Ash, by Malinda Lo
*Crazy Beautiful, by Lauren Baratz-Logsted
*Another Faust, by Daniel and Dina Nayeri
*As You Wish, by Jackson Pearce
*Rampant, by Diana Peterfreund
*Give Up The Ghost, by Megan Crewe
*Every Vampire Academy book, by Richelle Mead
*The David Levithan books (haven't read any, sadly)
*The Immortal Series, by Alyson Noël
*Oh.My.Gods and Goddess Boot Camp, by Tera Lynn Childs
*The Cinderella Society, by Kay Cassidy
*Ballads of Suburbia, by Stephanie Kuehnert
*Never Slow Dance With a Zombie by E. Van Lowe

And many, many more...

So, if you, by any chance, said: "Oh! That Argentine blogger might want this book,
even if it is a bit battered"
Go on and send it!
I don't care if you spilled some coffee over it, just as long as I can read it :o)

THANK YOU!
***

On another note, I signed up to read online ARCs (thanks to whoever invented this!)
and so, I'll be reading:
-Crazy Beautiful, by Lauren Baratz-Logsted
-Once a Witch, by Carolyn MacCullough
- Flash Burnout, by L. K. Madigan
-Front and Centre, by Catherine Murdock

I'm gonna go read Graceling now.
